Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing allow us to easily analyze trends in geographical regions. It is possible to measure almost anything by how much it is searched online. You can find how much any term is searched in any place – at the country level, State level and even by city.
For example, to determine in which U.S. states there is the high concern about Internet use problems, porn addiction and general concern over exposure to questionable Internet content, we looked at where the most searches occur for terms such as Web filter and porn filter. Utah, while certainly not the most populous state, is leading the charts with twice as many searches, followed by Louisiana. We can not reasonably begin to infer why these particular states are leading in the number of searches for porn filter — it could be that there is a problem with pornography addiction, it could be a higher level of awareness to the problem of pornography on the Internet or countless other reasons.
Sadly, we can see another interesting phenomena in the US. While the trend for looking for porn filters appears to be declining, there is a steady increase over the years for porn searches. Draw your own conclusions. But we should all be aware and concerned.
